Fine pair of Old Paris porcelain vases, each with overall gilding and well painted with hunting scenes, the elaborate handles with molded faces.
The decoration on these wonderful vases depicts various hunting scenes. The traditional landscapes in the collage labeled "Side 1" show a French stag hunt. On the left we see the beginning of the hunt, with the players milling around. The right hand vase depicts the hunt in full force. In the exotic, fanciful landscapes of "Side 2" the left hand vase depicts an African hunt, the natives in straw hats with spears. The right hand vase shows a Mongolian hunting party in the foreground with guns and swords, an African party in the background silhouetted against the palm trees. Notice also how the borders organize the scenes: the French hunt within a border of rectangular blocks; the exotic scenes within a rope border.
Finally, the molded faces in the handles are an unusual motif. Occasionally found on large mocha cups of the Charles X period, rarely do we see them on vases.
