Surprisingly, this superb desk caddy is unsigned. The highly figured rosewood and the mahogany secondary wood testify to the quality of materials used. The extraordinary, nearly invisible dovetails and the quality of the turnings of the balusters evidence the hands of the finest craftsmen. The integral letter rack with the brass keep is a rare and expensive feature. Finally, the cast and chased handles, that might have been gilded at one time, have been seen on similar objects attributed to Gillows. If not made by Gillows, this caddy was certainly made by one of the other top London shops.
