Little is known about Robert Niel, but what a talented painter! Like any successful genre painting, there is much to see here. The 'dialogue' between the sheep and chicken is just delightful. The bright landscape beyond the open door contrasts with the dark interior of the barn, where we wonder what startled the chicken into flight and what the farmer will find inside, as his dog looks on intently.
