Chinese Export pseudo armorial charger, the border and cavetto with elaborate underglaze slip decoration and overglaze flower painting; the pseudo armorial with a mountain bathed in sunlight within an elaborate cartouche over the motto "Si Serenus Illuxerit"; the reverse painted with flower sprays and a bamboo border.
This intriguing charger is from a large service copied from the Meissen original. It remains unclear for whom this service was made. The decoration to the cartouches illustrates the mottoes, which have strong religious overtones, so it is thought there could be a Jesuit connection. See David S. Howard, "The Choice of the Private Trader" (London: Zwemmer,1994) pp. 132-33.
