Achille Ernest Mouret (19th c.) French, "Villa Beausejour",
oil on canvas, signed and titled lower left,
12 ½" x 16"; 20" x 23 ½" framed.
Achille Ernest Mouret was born in Paris and worked in Bonnieres-sur-Seine, 40 miles to the northwest. He worked as a painter of portrait miniatures, landscapes and still-lifes and exhibited at the Paris Salon and with the Societe des Artistes Francais from 1844-1888. [1.]
The architectural and topographical details in this painting are stunning- it's clear Mouret intended to capture a specific place and time. Unfortunately, Villa Beausejour was a common name for houses and hotels throughout France, so the exact whereabouts of this bucolic scene are lost for now.
