Chinese Export Plate Made for the Continental Market

Chinese Export porcelain plate made for the Continental market, painted in black (en grisaille) with "A Lady At Her Toilet" within an orange (rouge de fer) and puce cartouche, spearhead cavetto and gilt leaf and vine border.

The subject of "A Lady At Her Toilet" was popular in the 18th century, and many versions can be found on Chinese Export porcelain. The source engraving for this version remains lost, but the cartouche shows a Meissen influence, suggesting a German origin.

For a teabowl with an identical scene but different borders, see Catherine Coleman Brower, "Chinese Export Porcelain from the Ethel (Mrs. Julius) and Arthur L. Liebman Porcelain Collection" (Madison: University of Wisconsin, 1992), 111.

There is an abrasion to the edge at 11:00, visible in the photo.
