Stainless steel abstract sculpture attributed to Brother Mel Meyer (1982-2013), mounted on a black porphyry base.

This elegant sculpture is almost certainly by Brother Mel Meyer (1928-2013), a Marianist monk and prolific artist. Primarily a sculptor, he also worked in a wide variety of materials, including acrylic, watercolor, stained glass, paper and textiles.

This sculpture has religious and mythic overtones. On the one hand, it resembles the hilt of a sword plunged into a stone, recalling the Legend of King Arthur. It also resembles the Chi-Rho, the early Christian symbol for Christ.

The base is black prophyry, a stone prized by the ancient Egyptians, Romans and early Christians.
