Smith traveled extensively throughout Europe and bought old picture frames along the way. This wonderful frame, probably purchased in France, is well distressed and suits the painting beautifully. Note the linen liner, daubed with paint!

Late in life, when he was infirm and no longer painting, Smith signed many of his unsigned works with an ink marker. This explains the contrast between the deft brushwork and trembling signature.
